The Effect of Privately Provided Police Services on Crime

چکیده
Research demonstrates that police reduce crime. The implication of this research for investment in a particular form of extra police services, those provided by private institutions, has not been rigorously examined. We capitalize on the discontinuity in police force size at the geographic boundary of a private university police department to estimate the effect of the extra police services on crime. Extra police provided by the university generate approximately 45-60 percent fewer crimes in the surrounding neighborhood. These effects appear to be similar to other estimates in the literature. * University of Pennsylvania, Department of Criminology ([email protected]; [email protected]) ** University of Pennsylvania, Law School ([email protected]) The authors are grateful to Vice President for Public Safety Maureen S. متن کاملThe effect of private police on crime: evidence from a geographic regression discontinuity design
Research demonstrates that police reduce crime. We study this question by using a natural experiment in which a private university increased the number of police patrols within an arbitrarily defined geographic boundary. Capitalizing on the discontinuity in patrols at the boundary, we estimate that the extra police decreased crime in adjacent city blocks by 43–73%. Our results are consistent wi...

متن کاملUsing a Terrorist Attack to Estimate the Effect of Police on Crime
Two of the main challenges in the literature on crime are to isolate significant causal effects of police on the amount of crime, and to distinguish between deterrence and incapacitation. Following a terrorist attack on the main Jewish center in July 1994, all Jewish and Muslim institutions in the city of Buenos Aires (including schools, synagogues, mosques and clubs) were given 24-hour police ...
